About OSPC
Burma
OSPC encourages Congress and the Administration to press the military dictatorship in Burma to restore political rights and democracy.

Burma continues to be ruled by a highly repressive military regime which abuses human rights and stifles all political opposition. Estimates place the number of political prisoners at well over 1,000. National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since May 2003, and the regime has shown no interest in genuine political dialogue with her or other NLD representatives. Successive U.S. administrations have called on the regime in Rangoon to restore civil and political rights and to move toward a democratic transition. The U.S. has imposed strong economic sanctions on Burma and has worked with like-minded countries and the U.N. to create pressure on the regime.

The Open Society Policy Center actively encourages the U.S. government to maintain its stance on Burma and to increase international pressure through the U.N. and other international organizations. OSPC works with congressional allies interested in restoring democracy to Burma. OSPC also works with NGOs and international organizations to develop strategies for ending the political stalemate in Burma.
