Broad Coalition Urges Defeat Of Legislation To Block Funding For Civilian Trials In 9/11 Cases
February 25, 2010
OSPC joined a coalition of human rights and civil liberties groups to urge the Senate to defeat legislation that would block the prosecution of the 9/11 cases in federal civilian criminal courts. Last November, the Justice Department announced its decision to prosecute Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo detainees in federal court in New York. In February, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced legislation to bar the use of federal funds for these trials. The bill seeks to force the Obama administration to try these cases in the military commissions, which are ill-equipped to try such a case. The discredited military commissions have resulted in only three convictions in eight years, while the federal criminal courts have secured 195 convictions in international terrorism cases.
