Nkechi Taifa testifies before the U.S. Sentencing Commission on the importance of applying the Fair Sentencing Act retroactively.

June 2, 2011

Nkechi Taifa, Open Society Policy Center senior policy analyst and Justice Roundtable convener, testified before the U.S. Sentencing Commission in support of the retroactive application of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010. Although the law does not completely eliminate the disparity, it reforms decades of racially discriminatory drug sentencing in the United States. Retroactivity of the bill would make 12,040 people eligible to receive reduced prison sentences.
